Description

When a professional states,"Your child has Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)", it is enough to make your whole world fall apart. What does it mean to be on the autism spectrum? How will this affect your child's life, your life, the life of your family, and others you interact with? What sorts of medications, therapies, and alternative methods are used to help manage the disorder? What are the financial and legal ramifications? How will this affect schooling, your spiritual growth, and everyday life? These are just a few of the questions that will rapidly cross your mind.

Caring for Autism: Practical Advice from a Parent and Physician delves into all these questions and more. As the father of a daughter with ASD and as a trained psychiatrist who specializes in ASD, Dr. Michael A. Ellis provides a holistic view of what comes after diagnosis. In user-friendly tones, he answers the most commonly asked questions about what it's actually like to live with ASD, what medications and therapies are available, and the global impact it has on the child's environment. With the help of his wife to provide a mother's perspective, Dr. Ellis shares personal stories of their 10-year journey in order to provide insight and support for anyone - patient, parent, caregiver - traversing the difficulties of autism.

Reviews

"Caring for Autism is a thoughtful and useful book for families of children with autism spectrum disorder...Dr. Ellis offers much more than pragmatic advice; he offers hope and inspiration to families of children with ASD." - Erik Loraas, AACAP News

"A comprehensive, insightful, intimate and personal guidebook on autism. This book reads like a novel and you will never want to put it down as you learn about autism diagnosis, prevention, understanding, and treatments from the perspective of a family coping with autism. The authors understanding on autism comes from both professional and personal experience. Whether you are a new parent to autism or a seasoned parent, you will access a step-by-step process from diagnosis to adulthood planning. This is a highly recommended resource from a truly gifted professional that proves to be an abundance of information of ideas, answers, and perspectives to all parents, family members, and practitioners of persons on the autism spectrum. A must read!" - Denise Camp Henry, M.Ed., CCC-SLP, Private Speech-Language Pathologist, Columbus, GA

"This book serves as a wonderful resource for families having a family member diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Having Dr. Ellis' deep understanding of autism from a clinician's, as well as, from a parent's point of view provides an enriched and unique source. This book is a great collection of important, medical information and the emotional support that parents need as they are going through the process of grief after the diagnosis of Autism. I will definitely add this book to the resource list I am providing for families caring for a family member diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. This book is highly recommended for clinicians providing services for patients diagnosed with autism in order to better understand and be sensitive to the families' emotional journey." - Franciska Kocsner, PsyD, Licensed Clinical Psychologist, The Brain Center, Columbus, Georgia.

"Dr. Ellis writes from the compassionate heart of a parent yet teaches the many facets of autism on a professional level. An excellent reference for anyone interested in learning more about the complexity of this wide spectrum disability." - Melissa Lape EdS, Parent, Special Education Teacher, Toccoa, Georgia.
